Deal Castle...

The cannonball heater, used for warming up cannonballs before they were fired at ememey ships, this would cause damage and also as the ships were made of wood, set them on fire too.
Some gunpower barrels circa 18th century.
The main entrance into the castle.

Day 2 of our weekend away lead us to Deal castle, one of Henry viii coastal forts around the south east coast built to ward off the threat of a catholic invasion after the reformation and disillusion of the monasteries.
Although no longer in use as a military barracks the signs of over 400 years of use are every where, although much of the castles outer appearance is as it was when first built, mainly due to part of the castle having a bomb dropped on it in ww2- Ironic really as the castle itself never actually fired a shot in anger for its original purpose!

That's incredibly ironic. Never a shot, huh?

Amazing, the ways we think of to kill each other, isn't it? Super-heated cannonballs. Cauldrons of uber-hot oil. Longbows that can tear through plates of armour. Not that we're any better today, by any stretch...it's just interesting what each generation devises.

Love the design of this castle...instead of the tall, stately, foreboding bit, this is it's rugby playing squatty, muscular brother. I hadn't seen one like this before. Are you sure all these places are near to you guys...like, part of the same country? Because you have so much more history than we could ever dream of having. Hollywood and Beverly Hills are a rotten joke in comparison to this kind of stuff. Sigh.
